New York City-based Pfizer Incorporated introduced two Sildenafil medications in 1998: Viagra for Erectile Dysfunction and Revatio for Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension also known as PAH. Similar FDA-approved oral Sildenafil drugs by competitors Bayer and Eli Lilly quickly followed Viagra. While that was happening, the drug’s popularity with customers remained steady, and with the expiration of Pfizer’s European patent, generic Viagra increased actually increased its popularity. Their affordability certainly played a central role in this regard as they cost a lot less than that drug. This was true even as the generics retained the standard of the original prescription-only tablets.
