Sildenafil Hypertension: Sildenafil’s Other Use
Aside from its known use for treating Erectile Dysfunction, Sildenafil can also be used for lowering the blood pressure. Pfizer has manufactured its Sildenafil brand Viagra but has also manufactured a brand for Pulmonary Hypertension which is Revatio. Compared to Erectile Dysfunction, Pulmonary Hypertension only requires small doses of Sildenafil. If Viagra has available dosages of 100mg, 50mg, and 25mg, Revatio only has 20mg maximum and also has smaller dosages of 10mg and 5mg.

Sildenafil works in the body by inhibiting an enzyme called Phosphodiesterase type 5 or PDE 5. As Sildenafil inhibits this enzyme, the muscles surrounding the blood vessels are relaxed allowing the blood vessels to temporarily expand and increase in diameter. What happens now is the body will now have an improved blood circulation and a fluid blood flow. This lowers the blood pressure and allows blood to be distributed in increased amounts to various parts of the body which explains why patients experience flushing when using this drug. For ED, this will now improve the blood flow to the penis which helps greatly in its erection. The constant blood flow will also help the patient sustain the erection for longer periods time, longer than the normal erectile response that can be sustained by the body.
Pulmonary Hypertension is a rare health condition where the pulmonary arteries become narrow, making it difficult for the blood coming from the heart reach the lungs. This results in the lungs not getting the right amounts of oxygen and the valves of the heart become enlarged and overworked. It is a condition so rare that it only affects 50 people in a million. The side effects of this condition are chest pains, shortness of breath, fainting, palpitations, and swellings in the body. If left untreated, Pulmonary Hypertension could be fatal and might develop to a heart failure.
By dilating these affected arteries, Sildenafil allows the blood to flow normally from the heart to the lungs, giving relief to the patient. This eases the stress on the heart’s muscles and allows sufficient amounts of oxygen from the blood to be supplied to the lungs, making the patient stronger. Sildenafil will also be lowering the blood pressure to normal levels which will eliminate the symptoms that the patient experiences.
Sildenafil Pulmonary Hypertension Dose
Unlike Viagra that is taken in large doses, Pulmonary Hypertension only needs small doses of Sildenafil. The least dosage amount of the drug that can be taken for Pulmonary Hypertension is 5mg and the most is 20mg. For this health condition, Sildenafil is taken three times a day with 4 hours’ interval in between dosing, compared to Viagra which is taken only when needed and a maximum of only once every 24 hours.

The patient’s dosage should not exceed the doctor’s prescribed amount as it may cause adverse effects on the health like hypotension, a fatal drop in the blood pressure that may cause a heart attack. If the doctor’s prescribed dosage doesn’t help with treating the symptoms, patients are not advised to increase the dosage amounts by themselves. They should consult their doctors first before proceeding with any further steps.
Sildenafil for Pulmonary Hypertension in Neonates
Pulmonary Hypertension is not only limited to adults as it can also be experienced by newly born infants. Also known as the Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Neonates (PPHN), this condition occurs when the infant’s blood pressure doesn’t normalize even after the normal breathing has been established. Babies normally have high blood pressures in their bodies while they are still inside their mother’s wombs. But after birth and the infants breathe air for the first time, the blood pressure should drop down to normal levels. PPHN is a serious condition with high mortality rate because it prevents the infant’s lungs to get sufficient amounts of oxygen causing respiratory distress. It also causes the baby to have rapid breathing, abnormal heartbeats, and cyanosis.
Infants with this condition are administered by the doctors with Sildenafil in very controlled and accurate doses. This will now help decrease the blood pressure in the infants’ body and the dilation of the blood vessels will now allow sufficient amounts of oxygen-carrying blood to go to their lungs making their breathing and heartbeats normal.
Sildenafil Pulmonary Hypertension Mechanism of Action
As the patient takes Sildenafil, the blood vessels in the body dilate, allowing an easier circulation of blood. For Pulmonary Hypertension, the same action is done by Sildenafil to the arteries that have grown thick and narrow which obstruct the normal blood flow. Sildenafil dilates these arteries which in turn relieves the heart’s muscles from the extreme stress of pumping the blood making the heartbeats normal. As the lungs now get sufficient amounts of oxygen, chest pains and the shortness of breath will now disappear enabling the patient to function normally.
Although known for its effectiveness in Erectile Dysfunction, Sildenafil can also be used for treating Pulmonary Hypertension. Doses for this condition are smaller compared to the doses needed by ED. It is taken three times a day with 4 hours’ interval in between doses to keep the symptoms at bay. Sildenafil is also used for babies with this condition although the exact dosage amount and the number of times it will be given is not discussed since doctors are the only ones allowed to administer this procedure.
Patients are advised to strictly follow the instructions provided by their doctors for them to be able to maximize the benefits of the medication. If patients continue to experience the symptoms of their condition even after taking Sildenafil, they should consult their doctors who could provide them a more accurate diagnosis of their condition.
