Sildenafil is a drug approved to treat both erectile dysfunction and pulmonary arterial hypertension. However, brand name sildenafil tablets Viagra and Revatio can be incredibly expensive. Fortunately, good generic sildenafil products are readily available!
There are many companies that manufacture generic 20 mg sildenafil tablets.
What is the Generic for Revatio?
The active ingredient in Revatio is sildenafil. As of 2017, generic versions of sildenafil are manufactured by a number of companies, including Ajanta, Mylan, Teva and Pfizer; Revatio and Viagra are also manufactured by Pfizer, so their generic version is likely made to maintain at least some drug revenue.
Like brand-name Revatio, the generics are sold as 20 mg tablets. Switching from brand-name Revatio to a generic should be relatively simple, and dosage instructions should be identical.
Is Sildenafil and Sildenafil Citrate The Same?
Yes! Sildenafil and sildenafil citrate refer to the same substance. This is the active ingredient in Viagra, Revatio, and all generic versions. You can safely have your doctor prescribe generic sildenafil or sildenafil citrate instead of a pricey brand-name medicine.
A Revatio tablet is marked with the name of its manufacturer, Pfizer, as well as the number “20” for a 20 mg dose of sildenafil
Is Generic Sildenafil As Good As Viagra?
Sildenafil is the active ingredient in Viagra. All prescription-only generics likewise have the same active ingredient, so you can rest assured that your generic sildenafil will be just as effective as expensive brand-name Viagra.
Generic Sildenafil Reviews
For the treatment of erectile dysfunction, the reviews of generic sildenafil are overwhelmingly positive, with many patients’ quality of life improved drastically. Reviews are more mixed for pulmonary hypertension, though it’s a much more serious condition, and not every treatment option will work for everyone.
Friedrich, Miami, finds that generic sildenafil products work just as well as brand-name Viagra. “It’s pointless spending so much more on Viagra,” he says.
Exotec suffers from pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and takes sildenafil to manage her conditoin. She’s more than pleased with the results, claiming, “It’s keeping me alive.”
Revatio vs Viagra
Sildenafil citrate is the active ingredient in both Revatio and Viagra, as well as all generic versions of these drugs. The main difference between Revatio and Viagra is the amount of sildenafil in each.
Revatio and its generic alternatives come in 20 mg tablets, 20 mg and 5 mg oral suspension, and 10 mg and 2.5 mg injection. These lower doses are meant for the treatment of pulmonary hypertension, though taking multiple 20 mg tablets can work for treating erectile dysfunction.
Viagra, as well as its generic versions, come in 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg tablets. The higher dosage is meant for treating erectile dysfunction. While these pills could, in theory, be used to treat pulmonary hypertension, since they can be cut in half, it is not recommended.
Some doctors will prescribe Revatio or its generic versions in place of Viagra, especially if cost is an issue. However, this is technically prescribing “off-label”; Revatio and many generic variants are only labeled for the treatment of pulmonary hypertension, despite containing the same active ingredient as Viagra. This is why some doctors will gladly write your prescription for 20 mg tablets, while other doctors may be hesitant to prescribe them.
Brand-name Revatio comes in oral suspension, tablet, and injection forms.
Your dosage of sildenafil will vary, depending on what condition you’re looking to treat. Always start by reading the directions and materials your doctor provides for you.
20 mg tablets of Revatio are swallowed just like other pills. For pulmonary hypertension, the standard dose is one 20 mg tablet three times a day, every four to six hours apart. If you forgot to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember, but don’t take two doses at once to make up for a missed dose. For erectile dysfunction, the starting dose is 50 mg, or between two and three 20 mg tablets; your doctor will give you a specific number when they write your prescription. Depending on how your body reacts to sildenafil, your dose may decrease to one 20 mg tablet, or increase to 100 mg, or five 20 mg tablets. Take your dose as needed, one hour before sexual activity.
Oral suspension Revatio will come in a bottle with a dosing syringe. To use, first shake the bottle for ten seconds, then open the bottle and attach the syringe to the bottle’s opening. Next, pull the syringe’s plunger to measure out your prescribed dose; the bottle’s label should tell you how many mg of sildenafil is in each mL of suspension. Finally, detach the syringe and squirt the medicine into your mouth. The amount in mg per dose is identical to sildenafil tablets: 20 mg every four to six hours for pulmonary hypertension, and anywhere from 25 mg to 100 mg for erectile dysfunction.
Revatio by injection is only available for those who normally take sildenafil for pulmonary hypertension and are temporarily unable to swallow medication. The injection will be administered intravenously.
While taking sildenafil products like Revatio, don’t eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice as grapefruit contains a chemical believed to increase the severity of side effects of sildenafil. Alcoholic beverages can reduce or nullify the effects of sildenafil, so don’t drink alcohol while using this medication. You can take sildenafil with or without food; the drug may start working more slowly after large meals, but not by much. Don’t take more than 100 mg of sildenafil a day for erectile dysfunction, and don’t take more than 20 mg at once for pulmonary hypertension; for both conditions, going above the maximum recommended dose of sildenafil has no benefit.
If you are under 18 years of age, only take sildenafil for pulmonary hypertension if prescribed by your doctor, and don’t take sildenafil for erectile dysfunction at all. If you have severe kidney or liver problems, always speak to your doctor before taking sildenafil, as these problems may limit how much sildenafil you can take, or prohibit you from taking it at all. If you’re on alpha-blocker therapy, wait until you’re stable on it before starting to take sildenafil.
20 mg sildenafil tablets can be found online at a wide range of prices. Brand name Revatio is much more expensive than generic alternatives; 90 tablets of Revatio will cost over $4000, while the same amount of generic 20 mg sildenafil tablets come up to just shy of $400.
Oral suspension Revatio isn’t easily found online; the closest alternative is a single-use packet of sildenafil jelly. A box of ten will cost around $75.

Always get a prescription from your doctor before shopping online for your sildenafil citrate products. Reputable pharmacies will only sell you medicine with a prescription from your doctor.
Beware of pharmacies that will sell sildenafil without a prescription. Many of these will sell you inferior or fake medicine. Many more aren’t pharmacies at all, but online scams that will take your money and deliver nothing. Even if you do find a pharmacy that sells genuine, quality products without a prescription, you may suffer an adverse effect to the medicine unless you check with a doctor first to make sure sildenafil is right for you.
Whether you’re looking to treat pulmonary hypertension or erectile dysfunction, generic variants of Revatio are readily available, both online and at many local pharmacies. These generic versions work just as well as brand-name Revatio, and are much more affordable.
